Marvin Bear and The Eating Place was written on a rainy day, in my car, next to a golf course somewhere in South San Jose, in 1980, and was illustrated over the next two years.

"Good Morning! Good Morning!
Today It's Not Storming!
I Hope You're Not Warming Your Toes In Your Bed!"

"The Stars Have Gone Out!
I Really Must Shout!
Get Up, Get Up You Lazy Bear!
Are You Going To Stay In There?

"No, Blue Jay", said Marvin, laughing as he leaned out the window.
"Today is a picnic day. We are going to the eating Place under the Hazelnut trees.
Elly Bear, Sea Lion, and Otter will be there.
Will you go with us too?"

Blue Jay was delighted.
"Of course", Blue Jay chuckled as he fluttered his wings and ruffled his feathers.
"I never miss a free lunch."

That was true, for Blue Jay always went on everyone's picnic,
and invited all of his brothers, and sisters, and cousins, and aunts, and uncles.
He was almost always the first to arrive and the last to leave.

Very carefully, Marvin put his head back inside the room.
This time he did not bump his head or his ears.
