Marvin Bear and The Eating Place was written on a rainy day, in my car, next to a golf course somewhere in South San Jose, in 1980, and was illustrated over the next two years.

Marvin opened one eye and then the other eye.

No, he was not eating raspberry pie with thimbleberry sauce.
No, he was not in his sailing boat with Sea Lion and Otter.
Marvin was in his own bed, in his own room, in his own house,
in the most far away corner of the Wonderful Forgotten Forest.

"This is the picnic day", Marvin thought to himself,
as he stretched out one paw and then the other, and yawned a great Bear Yawn.
"Sea Lion and Otter are going to meet me at the eating place
and Elly Bear will be here soon". With that, Marvin got out of bed and went to the window.
Blue Jay was still singing his Good Morning Song,
VERY LOUD, as he always did.
