Marvin Bear and The Eating Place was written on a rainy day, in my car, next to a golf course somewhere in South San Jose, in 1980, and was illustrated over the next two years.

Moose and Raccoon continued on their way to the Eating Place.
As they passed the Grandfather Tree, they heard a small voice call out.

It was Opossum, who was standing by the side of the path.
Opossum looked up at them very carefully,
for he could not see well at all.

"I see you have a new hat Marvin Bear", said Opossum. "Are you going to a party?"

Raccoon got up before Moose could say a word.

"I am certainly NOT a hat", replied Raccoon, "for hats do not go to picnics and that is where we are going."

Moose nodded his head in agreement
